Can spinach really increase your Hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is the one which is responsible for carrying oxygen to the rest of the body. It is a protein that can be found in the red blood cells. Another function that hemoglobin performs is that it transports carbon dioxide of the body cells and then back to the lungs to be exhaled out. When your hemoglobin count goes below the desired level, it can cause serious health problems. In men, the minimum level of hemoglobin count is 13.5 grams per deciliter and 12 grams per deciliter in women. There are various things that can actually hamper the hemoglobin level in your body such as pregnancy, anemia, infections in the urinary tract and also problems in the liver. There are various people who have low hemoglobin count for no reason at all and some never ever have any symptoms in spite of having low hemoglobin count.

Which foods to include in your diet plans for maintaining the normal hemoglobin count?

Iron plays as the master in the production of hemoglobin in your body. Transferrin, a protein which binds to iron in your body, helps in transporting iron throughout your body. This in turn helps in making red blood cells that ultimately contains hemoglobin.

The first thing that you can do for improving your hemoglobin count is by including iron rich food items in your diet plans. You can consume food rich which are rich in iron like beef, shellfish, broccoli, green beans, tofu, cabbage, lentils and spinach. There is a Vitamin B known as folate in your body that helps in producing heme. Heme is the part of the red blood cells that contains hemoglobin. Without the availability of enough folate, red blood cells cannot mature properly. This can ultimately lead to low levels of hemoglobin count. You can easily add folate in your diet plans by having rice, kidney beans, avocado and spinach.

Is spinach helpful in increasing hemoglobin level?

In case you need to improve your hemoglobin level, the only thing you can do is to consume iron rich food. Spinach is rich in iron content. Not only spinach but other green leafy vegetables come with high iron content. Including spinach in your therapeutic diet for increasing hemoglobin level can provide you with results within one month. You can consult your dietician for other recommendations as well. In case you do not like to have spinach in the solid state, you can consume it by turning into smoothie. Add on some fruits for improving the taste. Consuming iron is not the only thing that your body needs. Your body also needs to absorb the iron that you intake. In that case, spinach also helps in absorption of iron. Spinach comes with beta-carotene and Vitamin A can help your body to absorb more iron.

You can substitute spinach with other green leafy vegetables and fruits which are rich in iron content. Make sure that you do not exceed the daily iron need of your body. It might lead to some adverse effects on your body.

What are the other things that you can add on your diet plan for increasing the level of hemoglobin?

When you decide to eat something rich in iron, try to select those food items which are also rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps in increasing the amount of iron that your body can absorb in a day. You can also consume vitamin C supplements with your daily diet for supporting the level of iron in your body. You can choose food items rich in vitamin C like strawberries, lemon and green leafy vegetables. However, make sure that you balance the level of calcium in your daily diet. Calcium makes it harder for the body to absorb iron. Although you cannot eliminate calcium from your diet plans, try to avoid having calcium rich food items right after consuming iron rich food or supplements. Also, try to avoid walnuts and sesame seeds which are rich in phytic acid. It reduces the capacity of iron absorption by the body.
