Can Coffee Increase Your Metabolism, Burn Fat, & Lose Weight?

Coffee, the most popular and the most common beverage that can be found all over the world. Many people even have a fascination for drinking coffee all throughout the day and there are also many who cannot sleep without having coffee before going to bed. Coffee contains caffeine. It is the most common psychoactive substance in the whole world. Caffeine is also in many of the fat-burning supplements that can be found today and obviously for good reasons. Caffeine is among those substances which are known for mobilizing fats from the fat tissues and also helps in improving your metabolism. But, is coffee really effective in losing weight?

Coffee and the power of stimulants

Coffee beans come with the power of various biologically active stimulants. The stimulants help in affecting human metabolism. Some of them are:

  • Caffeine: It is the primary stimulant that can be found in coffee.

  • Theophylline: This stimulant helps in treating asthma.

  • Theobromine: This is the main stimulant in cocoa that can also be found in coffee.

  • Chlorogenic acid: This is one of the most active compounds that can be found in coffee. It helps in slowing down the process of carbs absorption.

Among all the other stimulants which are available in coffee, caffeine is regarded as the most potent of all and it has been researched extensively. Personal diets where coffee is included can readily help in increasing metabolism. Caffeine functions by blocking out the functioning of an inhibitory neurotransmitter known as adenosine. With the blockage of adenosine, caffeine improves the firing of the neurons and also releases several neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine. This, in turn, helps in making you feel much more energized and awake. That is why people consume coffee whenever they feel tired or sleepy. Thus, for creating a therapeutic diet, you can include coffee in your diet chart.

Coffee helps in mobilizing fat from fat tissues

Caffeine, the active stimulant found in coffee sends direct signals to the fat cells by stimulating the nervous system. This, in turn, breaks down the fat. It is done by increasing the level of blood of the hormone epinephrine. Epinephrine, which is also known as adrenaline, travels through human blood right to the fat tissues. It helps in breaking down fats and in turn releases them in the blood. However, releasing the fatty acids into your blood won’t help in losing fat unless and until you burn more calories than you consume through your diet. This condition is also known as negative energy balance. Reaching negative energy balance can be done in two ways, either by exercising more or by eating less. Another alternative strategy is to consume fat-burning supplements such as caffeine.

Coffee and its effect in increasing metabolic rate

The rate at which human beings burn calories while at rest is known as RMR or resting metabolic rate. The higher is your metabolic rate, the easier it will be for you to lose weight quickly. With a higher metabolic rate, you can also eat more without even gaining weight. It has been found from various studies that caffeine have the capacity of increasing RMR by 4% - 11%. The increase in your rate of metabolism increases with the increase in fat burning. Thus, including coffee in your diet plan for weight loss can actually help.

Coffee and losing weight in the long run in your weight loss diet

There is one very important admonition: you will become tolerant of all the effects of caffeine with time. In the shorter term, caffeine can readily help in boosting up metabolic rate and also increase the rate of fat burning. However, with the consumption of caffeine for a long term, people become tolerant of all the effects of caffeine and thus it stops working.

Whether or not coffee can help in reducing weight, in the long run, will depend on individual habits. However, presently, there is no valid evidence behind any long-term effect of coffee.

Coffee comes with a lower percentage of calories and is great for personal diets

While planning out for a weight loss diet, you need to create a diet chart which is deficit in calories. This can be easily done by consuming a lesser percentage of calories or by increasing the amount of physical activity. The easiest way of maintaining calorie in your diet is to consume low-calorie beverage. Coffee comes with a very low percentage of calories. One cup of coffee contains about 2 calories. This can be achieved when you consume coffee without milk and sugar. Replacing high sugar-containing beverages with coffee can be a good start for your weight loss program.
